Top 5+ The Best Laptops for College Students 2016

Top 5+ The Best Laptops for College Students 2016

7.0/7 rating 1 vote

A laptop is the most prized possession of any college student. We spend almost half our day glued to a laptop screen, either taking notes or checking up on our grades or to simply take a break from all the stress by watching the latest Game of Thrones episode. The higher studies are insurmountable without a laptop, as the whole ecosystem of a university is dependent on computers. You need a laptop for almost every task in college.

The specifications of a laptop ideal for college can vary from that of a workspace or a home PC. There are a lot of factors that come into play when deciding which laptop you should buy for college. The perfect laptop for home or office might be a disaster for a college student. The process of finding the perfect laptop can be challenging, tiring and downright exhausting, but lucky for you; we will help you find the perfect fit for you in the next 15 minutes.

Things to consider when buying a laptop for college

laptop for college

Let us first take a look at what factors you should consider when purchasing your ideal laptop for college. These benchmarks are there to help you look at what’s important when you are making your choice so you do not get swayed by the sleek and sexy design of a laptop and find out later on that it can barely keep up with your heavy software. Following are the things you should consider when buying your laptop:

Performance & Specs

Performance depends on CPU, RAM, hard drive, graphics, and display. A college laptop has to be powerful, no question about it. Most college students need to run heavy software on their laptops, so it is a top priority for a laptop to be able to handle these.

Portability

Take it from a former college student, and you do not want to buy a heavy laptop. Never. Ever. You will be carrying this laptop all around campus on your weak shoulder, and if it is a heavy office-type laptop, your shoulders will hate you, and you will hate your laptop. Please take your time in selecting a laptop that weighs less and has a good processing power, so you do not compromise on the laptop's ability to get work done and also remain carefree carrying it around all day.

Battery Life

Another huge factor that comes into play is the battery life. The worst thing that can happen to you is you have a deadline coming up, and as soon as you fire your laptop up, it blinks the dreaded battery sign. It happens more than it should, actually, and that is why you should opt for a laptop that has a huge battery life.

Keyboard & Touchpad

laptop for college

College students spend half their time typing papers and essays, so it makes sense to buy a laptop that will not tire your fingers soon. The keyboard needs to be smooth and easy to type, and the touchpad needs to be sensitive enough that it does not annoy you while surfing the web.

Design & Build Quality

A college laptop should look sleek and sexy for it gives you extra confidence when you roam around campus holding it in your hand. The build quality determines the durability of the laptop, and it should be solid so it can stand the test of time – and also the test of spilled bottles of ketchup and beers.

Top 8 choices for a perfect college laptop

Keeping these things in mind, we are going to list our top 8 choices for a perfect college laptop.

Battery Life

The battery on this bad boy is long-lasting. The average run-time of a Samsung Notebook 7 Spin battery is 5-6 hours. That is when you’re browsing different web pages and running Wi-Fi.

Keyboard and Touchpad

With the backlit keyboard, you can type with much ease at night too. The touchpad is 4.2 x 3 inch and has a glass feel. It is very responsive and allows gestures like zooming, scrolling, navigating and the works.

Design and Build Quality

This 2-in-1 laptop is beautifully designed and rotates at one hinge to let you use it as a tablet. The design is super-sexy and instantly likable. We give it extra style points for its sleek finish and solid build quality. It is durable and will stay with you for a long time.

2. Acer Aspire E 15 E5-573G-79JP 15.6-inch Full HD Notebook

Blazing fast, massive crispy display, great value for money

Couple it with a big 15.6 LED-lit screen, 1TB memory, and a dedicated 4GB NVIDIA GeForce graphics card and you have yourself a mighty powerful machine. Given these specifications, it gives a great value for money.

Portability

It has a wider screen size, contributing to the heavier 5.29lbs weight. It is a little heavier to carry around but it laptop will make up for it in the performance department.

Battery Life

Its Lithium Ion battery gives an average of 5 hours. With a big screen and huge processing power, this backup is quite impressive.

Keyboard and Touchpad

This Acer Aspire comes with Acer’s Fine Tip keyboard which is smooth and pleasurable to work with. It has a precision touchpad which supports multi-gestures thus is capable of the multi-touch charades.

Design and Build Quality

It has a plastic casing which looks quite sleek but requires a little extra care to prevent dents. The charcoal gray body color coupled with the black keyboard gives a serious yet sexy outlook.

3. Apple MacBook MLHE2LL/A 12-Inch Laptop with Retina

Sleek, Amazingly lightweight, Robust Mac OS, Spectacular Display

Performance & Specs

Apple MacBook is has stirred up a lot of mixed views about the laptop from different types of users. It has a 1.1 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core M3 Processor (which can Turbo Boost up to 2.2 GHz), which is enough to power a machine of this size but might not fit a college student’s needs. The 8GB RAM and 256GB Flash Storage makes it super-speedy. Another peculiar thing about this laptop is that it has only one USB-C type port and all other peripherals can be attached using an adapter bridge. You’ll have to spend some extra cash to buy that.

MacBook's display, however, is truly spectacular. Touted as the crispest display on the market, it leaves all others with its 12" 2304 x 1440 Retina display.

Portability

MacBook weighs 3.24lbs and is one of the lightest laptops you will find on the market. If portability is your biggest concern, you cannot do better than this one. Safely sitting in your backpack, you won't even feel if it is there during your day on the campus.

Battery Life

This new MacBook design features a much more enhanced battery life. It has 35% more battery capacity than before and gives a 10 hours’ backup for web browsing and 11 hours of iTunes movie playback.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard of this MacBook is controversial; some people tend to like it, and others don't, but the general opinion is that it's too shallow and is not that good compared to the previous MacBook Pro keyboards. Touchpad offers Force Touch which is similar to 3D touch on iPhones, it detects the pressure of your click and does different actions based on the pressure. It has its uses in various apps.

Design and Build Quality

No one does design better than Apple. The cool, thin and sexy design will score you extra style points, and it feels nice to carry around. The body is signature Apple aluminum and is quite durable. But since it is a thin little machine, 3.5mm at its thinnest, we would advise you to be extra careful handling it. It is not the rough and tough kind.

4. HP 14-an013nr 14-Inch Notebook

Insanely cheap, lightweight, excellent battery

Performance and Specs

With a 1.8GHz Quad-Core AMD Processor and a 4GB RAM, this laptop does not fit in the big leagues, but it gives as much as can be expected in that price range. Granted the high performance of a 32GB SSD, you will need to compensate for it by buying an external hard drive. It has a 14” screen with 1920x1080 pixels which makes the display quite awesome.

Portability

This HP laptop weighs 3.86lbs and is a very light-weight option for a low budget laptop. Easy-to-carry around and a big enough display, certainly a difficult combo to match.

Battery Life

It gives around 5 hours and 15 minutes of backup which is at par with other laptops that are high in performance and cost higher. Great battery timing for this price tag.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The chiclet-style keyboard is not backlit, but it is better than average at typing and comfort levels. The up and down arrow keys are smaller, but the rest of the keys are standard size. The touchpad is responsive and has two left and right click buttons.

Design and Build Quality

The body is a fine quality plastic with textured line grooves and a really nice finish. As most HP laptops, the build quality is durable. For $199, this is the best you can ask for.

5. Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6 Full HD

Powerful, Blazing Fast

Performance and Specs

This laptop houses a Core i5 2.3Ghz processor which can be boosted up to 2.8Ghz and comes with 8GB RAM, a 15.6” huge HD screen and a 2GB dedicated NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. The discerning spec of this laptop is its 256GB SSD which makes it much faster. The boot times, file transfers, application loading times all get a boost with SSD drive.

Portability

Weighing 5.27lbs, it is a little heavier to carry around than some of the other laptops we have reviewed with same specs.

Battery Life

While Acer boasts a 12-hour battery life for this laptop, we have seen mixed reviews about it. Some say it lasts around 5 hours while surfing the web over Wi-Fi and others quote a different figure. But in any case, the battery life seems to be adequate for college usage.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Backlit keyboard, very comfortable and quite nicely spaced. Precision Touchpad offers great control and multi-gestures.

Design and Build Quality

It has a bland design characteristic to most other laptops in this price range. But the build quality is sturdy and can handle roughness which makes it a great fit for students.

6. Dell 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop

Great gaming experience in a college laptop

Performance

This gaming laptop is a powerhouse with its Intel Quad-Core i5 2.3GHz processor that can be boosted up to 3.2GHz and is coupled with 8GBs of RAM, 4GB dedicated NVIDIA GeForce graphics and a 256GB SSD. You cannot ask for a laptop this cutting edge in a sexier build and a very reasonable price range.

Portability

At 6lbs, this laptop does not do well in the portability department. But then again, no gaming laptop has ever been easy-to-carry around all day. This is your best bet if you want a gaming laptop for college.

Battery Life

It gives 4.5 hours of battery life. Given the specifications and the huge screen, this is one of the better batteries we have seen.

Keyboard and Touchpad

It has a backlit keyboard that provides an average typing experience. The touchpad is a little to the left. It has a nice precision, responsiveness and offers multi-gestures.

Design and Build Quality

The design is quite sleek compared to other gaming laptops. It has a premium aluminum build with diamond-cut beveled edges that make its appearance quite thin and slick. It is also quite sturdy and can handle a little rough treatment.

7. ASUS ZenBook UX305UA 13.3-Inch Laptop

Sleek, Light as a feather, and cutting-edge

Performance

It houses an Intel Core i5 2.3GHz (can be boosted up to 2.8GHz) Skylake Processor, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD to make it a powerful high-end laptop. It goes with a beautiful 13.3" anti-glare matte display screen. This machine will run smooth and flawlessly for any application you employ it for.

Portability

With a 2.9lbs weight, it is light as a feather. A tremendously powerful laptop was offering great portability, it’s perfect for college.

Battery Life

It offers 10 hours of backup which is sufficient for two college days. You will love it for its battery, lightness, and beautiful design.

Keyboard and Touchpad

It has a full-size ergonomic keyboard with a beautiful outlook, and comfortable keypresses. The touchpad is responsive and a little larger than average touchpads, making it more fun and easy to use.

Design and Build Quality

This is an ultrabook with the focus on portability, so naturally, it is super-thin and offers great build quality. The metallic body of this laptop gives it a sturdiness that is pertinent to such ultrabooks. The design is super sleek and sexy with an awesome Titanium Gold color.

8. Acer Chromebook 15 CB5-571-C1DZ

Super cheap with a long lasting battery

Performance and Specs

With a meager Intel Celeron Dual-Core 1.5 GHz Processor and a 4GB RAM, this Chromebook is not made for heavy processing. Its 32GB storage is not made for storing big files either. It does not let you install a standard MS Office software; you have to the online version of Quick Office tools. This is a huge drawback for college students. It has a 15.6” display with a standard Intel graphics card.

Portability

At 4.85lbs, it really is not worth having to fling around that much weight with low power. We have seen way lighter notebooks with so much more power.

Battery Life

Its 9-hour battery backup is a pretty good but does not get you very far with low performance.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The island-style keyboard, although not backlit, is pretty sturdy and is standard sized. It is made for heavy usage over longer periods of time. The trackpad is big and responsive.

Design and Build Quality

The body is plastic and quite sturdy. It is made for rough use and can withstand unfavorable conditions - like a college dorm. The grip is quite nice with a woven texture.

Verdict

With laptop manufacturers shipping out new laptops every month, it is quite hard to choose a laptop that fits your needs perfectly.
