Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf Speaker Review

Design

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2
The B6.2 can deliver first-rate build quality

The B6.2 speaker features a cheerfully retro look, recalling s older British designs from Bowers & Wilkins or Wharfedale. I have placed the original Debut B6 next to this speaker. It looks like a completely different model. The B6 is short and squat, while its junior is slimmer and taller with the addition of one front bass port.

Like its predecessor, the B6.2 features an aramid fiber woofer (6.5 inches) and a silk dome tweeter (1 inch), but the implementation is different. The tweeter on the original Debut B6 speakers was recessed, making them more directional. Meanwhile, and around the mesh-covered tweeter of the b6.2 is flush with its front pane.

The driver của the b6.2 has an extruded dust cap designed to enable the driver to be more responsive, and the original model was resonant. When you rap a knuckle on its side, it will ring. Meanwhile, the B6.2 comes with additional bracing to reduce potential sonic coloration. So if you knock on it, it will give a faintly metallic plop.

The change isn’t just about extra bracing. When I looked closer, I noticed an old-school black ash wrap was used rather than the brushed vinyl on the original Debut. Eventually, I found a pair of metal binding posts around its back.

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2

As Elac recommends, you should partner this speaker with receivers up to one hundred and twenty watts per channel. It features an 87 dB sensitivity and 44Hz to 35 kHz frequency response, meaning it easily fills any small to medium room.

The b6.2 has a front-mounted port, allowing you to put it close to the wall. But I recommend placing it at least an inch away from the wall to avoid boomy bass.

Sound

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2

The sound of B6.2 is different from the original. The sound of its predecessor is easy to listen to and feels comfortable. The B6.2 features a livelier, clearer sound.

To test the B6.2’s sound, I paired it with the B6 and hooked them to the Oppo UDP-205 Blu-ray player and  Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver, then listened to the Stoned & Dethroned album of Mary Chain and Jesus. The B6 speaker sounded bold and big. Whether loud or quiet, it felt right, especially for speakers at their price level.

For the new B6.2 speaker, the soundstage seems more three-dimensional and bigger. The layered mix of electric and acoustic guitars, drums, vocals, and bass was more clearly revealed.

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2

The massive reverberation of the mix positively bloomed over the Elac Debut B6.2 while the sound flattened out towards the B6. The differing character of the two speakers is more pronounced when I compare acoustic music. The B6.2’s midrange sounded immediate and more present, while the sound of B6 was a bit more laid back.

The B6.2’s high frequencies are better resolved and brighter, and it delivers a transparent window on the music. The B6 speaker is blurrier and softer. Meanwhile, the B6.2 model is leaner in the mid-bass and better defined. However, the bass went satisfyingly deep for a speaker the size of the B6.2. When we played the test tones, they reached the high 40-Hertz range.

Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf Speaker Worth Buying?

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2

Although the Debut 2.0 B6.2 is amazing and worth buying, I still enjoy the original B6 speaker very much.

If you own this older speaker, I don’t recommend upgrading to the Debut B6.2. However, if you love more clarity, the B6.2 speaker is well worth considering.
